This work of legal historiography attempts to illustrate the process and the product of the institutionalization of racism in Canada. Spanning the first half of the 20th century, the book presents detailed accounts of six legal case studies involving criminal and civil law at various levels of the judicial system. Backhouse pinpoints the role of the judiciary in the creation and preservation of systemic racial discrimination in Canada and thus seeks to debunk the popular notion of Canada as a wholly tolerant society. The author also includes a fairly extensive bibliography for further reference and research. 

Ce travail d'historiographie juridique tente d'illustrer le processus et le produit de l'institutionnalisation du racisme au Canada. Ce livre, qui couvre la première moitié du XXe siècle, présente des comptes rendus détaillés de six études de cas portant sur le droit pénal et le droit civil à différents niveaux du système judiciaire. Backhouse identifie le rôle du pouvoir judiciaire dans la création et la préservation de la discrimination raciale systémique au Canada et cherche ainsi à démystifier la notion populaire du Canada en tant que société totalement tolérante. L’auteur comprend également une bibliographie assez exhaustive pour référence et recherches ultérieures.
