David Matas is an international human rights, immigration and refugee lawyer based in Winnipeg. He was a director of the International Defence & Aid Fund for South Africa in Canada in 1990 and 1991 and Canada South Africa Cooperation from 1991 to 1993. For B'nai Brith Canada, David Matas has been Chair of the League for Human Rights from 1983 to 1985, Vice President from 1996 to 1998 and Senior Honorary Counsel 1989 to the present. For the Canadian Jewish Congress, he was Co Chair of their Race Relations and the Law Project from 1985 to 1987. For the Canadian Bar Association, David Matas was a member of the Working Group on Racial Equality in the Legal Profession from 1994 to 2000, member of the Racial Equality Implementation Committee from 2000 to 2004, and chair from 2002 to 2004, and member of the Standing Committee on Equity from 2004 to 2007. David Matas is the author of Bloody Words: Hate and Free Speech published by Bain & Cox in 2000 and Aftershock: Anti Zionism and Antisemitism, published by Dundurn in 2005.
