Review

Following the conclusions of the report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, the Government of Canada established an action plan to renew the relationship between the Aboriginals and Non-Aboriginals of Canada.

The plan involves reinforcing the governmental autonomy of Aboriginal nations, with an emphasis on responsible and durable governments; it involves an international declaration by the Government of Canada that 'reflects the unique place of indigenous peoples in the world and applies universally' (p.9); it involves the establishment of a new financial relationship between the federal government and Aboriginal governments; and the commencement of discussions to commemorate historic treaties and renewed partnerships between the Canadian government and the territories with the aim of promoting political and economic development.
