The term racial profiling is of rather recent origin. It is usually confined to discussions of the policing of racially diverse communities... However, our use of this term is broader and deeper; it includes the various discourses that are articulated by the police, governments, and other authorities, and by the media, in their efforts to rationalize and justify racialized behaviours and practices... Our approach to the issue and practice of racial profiling is to deconstruct the hegemonic force that shaes the lives of Black people and other minoritized communities by text, talk, and actions of policing community and other White elites, including politicians and journalists.
