Brenda Reimer grew up in Winnipeg in a largely middle-class neighbourhood. Her parents always welcomed overseas students, refugees and newcomers to the city to their home. Post-graduate study in New York City and a year of teaching in London, England added to her experiences of diversity.
She has been involved with March 21st activities and Diversity Thunder Bay since the early 1990s. She retired as Executive Director of Lakehead Social Planning Council in 2002 after 19 years serving that organization.
Since retirement, Brenda has continued her role with Diversity Thunder Bay and presently is the secretary as well as a member of the Incidence Response Committee and the Education Committee. For the past 5 years, she has tried to build a bridge between her church, St. Paul’s United, and the Aboriginal Community, particularly students coming in to Thunder Bay. In partnership with Keewaytinook Agimakanak Student Support Services, the church now hosts an annual welcome dinner for the students and their boarding parents, as well as assists with a Christmas Dinner.
Brenda has a BA from the University of Manitoba - 1961 and a Master of Religious Education from Union Theological Seminary in New York - 1964. She recently celebrated 50 years of marriage to Oliver Reimer. They have a daughter; a son and one grandson.
