CRRF at the Canadian Association of Statutory Human Rights Agencies
At the invitation of CASHRA, Dr. Al-Yassini spoke at the Association’s meeting in Toronto on Human Rights and Citizenship. He discussed the demographic changes which have taken place in Canadian society over the past thirty years and the impact of these changes on the work of human rights agencies. He noted that the perception of “us” and “them” continues to preoccupy the mind and behaviour of some. “Our challenge”, he noted, “is to foster diversity and forge a shared national identity and commitment to citizenship, which includes rights and responsibilities.” He urged participants to start thinking of a national charter on the rights and responsiblities of citizenship.
