The Canadian Race Relations Foundation is deeply saddened and appalled by the deadly attack on the Afzaal family in London, Ontario. Violence motivated by the hatred of one's religion or skin colour, or country of origin is a dangerous trajectory that our society cannot afford to accept. This tragedy is emblematic of unacceptable cruelty taking root in our community and serves as further evidence of the Islamophobia many Muslim Canadians have long experienced and warned us about. These warnings should always be heeded and taken seriously. We recognize the growing and justifiable fear Muslim Canadians are experiencing in the wake of such senseless violence.
All of us must take this moment in time to not only mourn the deaths of these four innocent people but must also reflect on the ways that we, as a society, can put a stop to hate crimes before they devolve into acts of terrorism like the one experienced this past Sunday. CRRF stands in solidarity with the Afzaal family and all Muslim Canadians at this time. We also call for swift justice for all victims of hate crimes across.
