Expanding education curriculum to include social and emotional health – featuring "The Faith Project" Virtual Classroom event
March 3, 2016: This is a special session broadcast from the Metropolis Conference in Toronto, starting at 1:30 (EST) and a live event broadcast to schools across Canada.
Canadian society is rapidly advancing to include a diversity of cultures and perspectives at an unparalleled rate. The importance of engaging young people in the rapid advancement of how we live and work is paramount – and attendantly, the expansion of our education curriculum to include social and emotional health is no longer a luxury.
2016: There's a shift from the concept of school as a repository for basic skills to a place where young people can go to feel safe and learn social skills that will support their increasingly complex journey from adolescence to adulthood.
The opening segment of this session features The Faith Project, a best practice in cross-curricular classroom resources, representative of the National Film Board's (NFB) online media solution for today's classrooms. The NFB Virtual Classroom gives students across Canada the opportunity to engage in a live online discussion with panellists, and Metropolis delegates an opportunity to observe innovation at work. This unique 45-minute event represents a forum for a variety of viewpoints on creed, religion and faith.
Following the Virtual Classroom event, a panel of innovators connected to this project and working to push the education envelope, discuss why rapidly customizable resources are needed in today's education and social services environment, the opportunities for advancing education and knowledge, and the challenges of working in a slow-moving curriculum environment. The dialogue is extended to Metropolis delegates, with the opportunity to direct comments and questions to all the presenters.
