Focus of Activities
CommunityWise is a nonprofit hub that, for over 40 years, has existed to support and strengthen diverse grassroots groups and nonprofit organizations and their employees and volunteers. We provide affordable office and community space, backbone infrastructure (shared internet, mailboxes, office equipment), and collaborative capacity-building programming to 90 member organizations. The work of these supported organizations spans a broad spectrum of social, environmental, and cultural issues. Our goals are to 1) support our members so that they are better able to achieve their own organizational goals and 2) contribute to making Calgary's grassroots and nonprofit sector more equitable.
CommunityWise has been guided by an anti-oppressive practice framework since 2012 and has been undertaking an Anti-Racist Organizational Change (AROC) process since 2016 that centers the voices of those most impacted by racism - racialized and Indigenous people who work in, volunteer with, or are served by nonprofits in Calgary. Multiple evaluation activities have demonstrated that AROC has resulted in positive outcomes for both CommunityWise and our members. The broader nonprofit sector has also been impacted through the dissemination of print and audio resources and through participating in anti-racism trainings provided by CommunityWise. Our work has been supported by four different funders, including a community foundation, a private foundation, and a government funder, and was recently recognized by a Canadian Race Relations Foundation Award of Excellence (Community category, 2018) for excellence and innovation in combating racism.
