Diviya Leonard is a grade 9 student who is extremely passionate about girls' rights, and is the youngest member of the Because I am a Girl (BIAAG) Speaker’s Bureau. Diviya was first exposed to Plan Canada when her family sponsored two girls from Africa and India.
When she was 11, Diviya entered a speech competition at her school and won the contest with a speech highlighting issues girls face in the third world. Diviya’s winning speech was then featured on the BIAAG blog, which gave her a keen interest in raising awareness for girls’ rights.
Diviya now has her own blog titled Diviya Lives Here, which has been viewed in over 50 countries around the world, and features frequent posts about girls’ rights and inspirational people who are working to change the world for the better. When she is not blogging about social justice and human rights, Diviya can be found playing rep ringette for the Markham Bears, or immersed in one of her favourite books.
