Sixty years ago, Order of Canada recipient Archie Alleyne broke the colour barrier as a 'regular' Black musician in an era remembered for its 'Whites Only' restaurant, movie, bus and tavern signs.
Today, the self-taught drummer and jazz great continues to cut across colour barriers by offering music scholarships and bursaries to talented young people of every ethnicity through the Archie Alleyne Scholarship Fund.
Mr. Alleyne's friends, past and present, have included the legendary Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, Teddy Wilson, Jackie Richardson, Nina Simone, Jay Jackson, Shawne Jackson and countless other young musicians.
A showing of Archie’s photo exhibition of Black music greats will be held during the Our Canada Symposium.
