Abstract English
The Central Neighbourhood House policy of anti-oppression and mutual respect is an attempt to ensure a healthy and welcoming work and community environment for all members of the community. The Policy recognizes the prevalence of discrimination and harassment, and consequently offers support for people to deal constructively with these issues. The policy begins with a list of definitions and examples of various discriminatory behaviours. Next the policy states its goal of prevention, and outlines methods of lodging complaints, both informal and formal. In addition to outlining the process of complaint, the policy also outlines the responsibilities of the Anti-Oppression Committee in providing a formal remedy.
Quotations
Harassment may not necessarily be directed at a person, but can include a general climate of disrespect, offensive language, and on-going belittling of co-workers, clients or volunteers. This kind of unwelcoming work atmosphere is called a 'poisoned work environment' and is also prohibited by the Human Rights Codes. (p.4)
